Anthropological Society of Manipur
Regd. No. 4514 of 1983

The Anthropological Society of Manipur (ASM) is the conception of some keen anthropologists in the state who felt the need for a platform where anthropologists can come together for a cause. The society took birth at D.M. College of Science, Imphal, Manipur, in 1982 and became a registered body in 1984 under the Manipur Co-operative Societies Act with Registration No. 4514 of 1983. The head office was then shifted to the Department of Anthropology, Manipur University, Canchipur, where a room was allotted for setting up a permanent office.

The primary aim of the society is to foster inter-disciplinary coordination between anthropology and other cognate branches of knowledge and explore ways and means for applying anthropology for the society at large. One of the significant achievements of the ASM is the publication of the first issue of the Journal of Anthropological Society of Manipur in 1994. Publication of the journal continued under an efficient editorial board. In 2012, the name of the journal was changed to “Frontier Anthropology” which aims at imparting knowledge that may help understand human in a larger academic context. “Frontier Anthropology” has been publishing original and significant articles on empirical, analytical, and theoretical frontier areas in different fields of anthropology on an annual basis. The society also organizes memorial lectures, annual conferences, seminars, and symposia from time to time.
